Parkland Health and Hospital System is the health care facility of the Dallas County Hospital District and is the principal teaching hospital for the UT Southwestern Medical School. The primary purpose, by law, of the Dallas County Hospital District is to provide medical care for the indigent population of Dallas County. At the present time, Parkland has approximately 900 beds, excluding infant bassinets; 371 of these beds are designed for surgical services. The surgical beds have an occupancy rate of over 90%. Approximately 180,000 emergency room visits are logged each year.
The educational goals and objectives for the resident assigned to Parkland Health and Hospital System are:
The Core Competencies that are stressed at Parkland Health and Hospital System (PHHS) include patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. As you can see, all Core Competencies are stressed at Parkland, and for this reason, this rotation is one of the most important of our residency program. Parkland serves as the major county hospital servicing Dallas. It is a primary referral center for all indigent patients living in Dallas County and the major trauma center in the area as well. In addition to being a very busy surgical rotation, the Outpatient Clinic at Parkland Health and Hospital System is an active one. Outpatient urological procedures including urodynamics, transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsies, cystoscopy, stent placement, pyelography, as well as many others are carried out within the Parkland Hospital Outpatient Center. Residents are overseen at PHHS by the Chief of Urology at Parkland, Dr. Key Stage, in addition to other rotating faculty members who sign in daily in the outpatient clinic. The residents are exposed to a busy trauma service at Parkland, and participate in all emergency urological care. This includes trauma care as well as acute stone care and other urological emergencies. The Urology Service has an operating room active 4.5 days per week at Parkland. Patients seen and admitted at PHHS are routinely first seen in the Outpatient Clinic and, therefore, the full scope of their care including from the minute they are diagnosed to the time they are treated is orchestrated by the Urology residents and overseen by the Urology faculty. This involves communication with the patient in developing and carrying out a treatment plan as well as incorporating other services when necessary to supply optimal care. Residents are also exposed to extracorporal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) during the Parkland rotation as the Parkland ESWL unit is the sole stone treatment unit at the UT Southwestern campus.
