The Residency Experience

Resident training begins with one year in the world-renowned Parkland Health and Hospital System surgery program, with rotations in general surgery, trauma, vascular, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery and urology. Rotation assignments are identical to residents staying in general surgery.

The program balances graduated clinical responsibilities with faculty supervision, organized conferences and research. During the first year, substantial time is devoted to diagnostic urologic skills, including endoscopy, ultrasound and urodynamics. Rotations at Children's Medical Center Dallas and Zale Lipshy University Hospital provide the U1 resident with significant operating experience.

The U2 year focuses primarily on open surgical skills and endourology/laparoscopy. A six-month block time allows initiation and completion of one or more research projects with subsequent presentation at a national meeting and publication of the results in a peer-reviewed journal.

During the U3 rotation, residents function at chief resident levels at Children's Medical Center Dallas, performing a variety of complex reconstructive procedures.

During the U4 year, chief residents direct the urology services at both Parkland and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, making all major management decisions. The PGY-5 rotations at Zale Lipshy University Hospital and Baylor Hospital are intense operating experiences under the supervision of full-time and part-time voluntary faculty.
