     More About Our Program

The Department of Urology is funded as an NIH/NCI George W. O'Brien Urologic Research Center. Additional funding for basic research comes from other NIH and DOD grants, private foundations, contracts and endowments.

The research program at UT Southwestern offers diverse options for resident projects.  During their U2 year, the resident may do basic, molecular, or clinical research while on the Parkland clinical rotation.  The Department is funded as an NIH/NCI George W. O’Brien Urologic Research Center.  In addition to this large Center grant, we are funded through a variety of NIH grants, contracts, and a substantial endowment.

Five urology laboratories provide core facilities, Ph.D. supervision, and ample workspace.  In addition, the resident may elect to spend his or her research time in our collaborative laboratories in Endocrinology, Molecular Genetics, or Mineral Metabolism.  Facilities for clinical research include research clinics in renal stone disease, prostate disease, oncology, and bladder dysfunction.  Clinical research nurses, computer resources, and biostatistical expertise are available to assist with resident projects.

The educational program is structured around a core curriculum, repeated every two years. Weekly Teaching Conferences are attended by all residents and include:

  • Resident Lecture Series
  • Grand Rounds
  • Uro-pathology and
  • Pre-op conferences

Pediatric Urology Conferences are held biweekly, while the Journal Club and Morbidity and Mortality Conference are held monthly. At least two visiting professors provide special conferences each year.
