Adolescent Service

The Adolescent Medicine Service is dedicated to improving adolescent health through health care delivery, education and research. The Adolescent / Young Adult (AYA) Clinic at Children's Medical Center of Dallas is staffed by faculty with special interest and training in the areas of Adolescent and Sports Medicine. The clinic sees patients 11-21 years of age and welcomes referrals from community physicians and health care clinics. Research interests include obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome. Child Abuse Service:
Faculty contact: Matt Cox, M.D.
The Referral and Evaluation of Abused Children (REACH) clinic at Children's Medical Center of Dallas is staffed by fellowship trained faculty in child abuse and Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Emergency Referral Center (ERC) and inpatient consultation are available. The clinic is a resource for education and research. Medical students are given a basic overview of issues in child abuse and neglect, and the physician role in recognition and intervention including reporting laws and working with community agencies. The emphasis on teaching residents is to be able to recognize children at risk and to make the appropriate referrals. First Care Clinic

First Care clinic at Children's Medical Center of Dallas evaluates acute, non-emergent ambulatory patients. The General Pediatric faculty staff supervises Pediatric residents and support the educational objectives in the curriculum, through patient care, informal lectures and teaching conferences. First Care has recently expanded its morning time role to include acute and well child care of Continuity Clinic patients. Foster Care Service:

The Foster Care clinic at Children's Medical Center of Dallas is staffed by faculty and pediatric nurse practitioners experienced in treating children who are in foster care as a result of abuse or neglect. The Foster Care clinic is dedicated exclusively to providing comprehensive primary medical care and case management services to children in the custody of Child Protective Services. General Inpatient Service and Hospitalist Service

The General Inpatient Teaching Service and Hospitalist Service at Children’ s Medical Center care for children referred by community physicians and patients without a primary care physician. General Inpatient Teaching Service and Hospitalist Service is staffed by members of the General Pediatric Division. This service provides care whether or not referring physicians have hospital admitting privileges. The faculty directs the patient's care and communicates with the referring physician after admission, at the time of discharge and if there are any significant changes during the hospitalization. Inpatient consultation for General Pediatrics can be obtained from the Hospitalist service.
General Pediatric Consultation and Diagnostic Service

The General Pediatric outpatient consultation and Diagnostic Service at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas is available for referral of patients by primary care physicians and specialists. Faculty members in the General Pediatric Division are available for comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, recommendations for treatment and referral back to their primary care physicians. Lead Toxicity Service:

The Lead Toxicity Clinic at Children's Medical Center of Dallas receives referral from the Texas Department of Health as well as from community physicians when children are found to have elevated blood lead levels. The faculty works closely with the primary physician as well as the health department to evaluate the home and work environments of the caregivers in order to locate the source of lead to the patients. Education of the family on the consequences of lead poisoning and on the importance of avoidance of the lead source is offered. Medical treatment in the form of chelation is given when necessary. Referral Care Service

The Referral Care Center is a section of the Children’s Emergency Center providing after-hours care to patients referred by their physicians for management of low to moderate acuity conditions. The Referral Care Center is staffed by the Division of General Pediatric faculty and other Children’s medical staff members. A Referral Care Center pediatrician evaluates each patient and, if requested, speaks with the patient’s primary care physician regarding the assessment and plan. A summary of the visit is also sent to the primary care physician via fax. Patients who present at the Referral Care Center with high acuity or complex conditions requiring specialty care will be transferred to the main emergency center. Resident Continuity Clinic

The faculty in the Division of General Pediatrics staff The Crystal Charity Ball Continuity of Care Clinic at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. The clinic is the location for the pediatric residency program’s training in primary ambulatory continuous care, providing comprehensive care to both well and chronically ill children. Patients referred to this clinic include newborn babies and patients referred by our pediatric residents. The clinic also is the center for many clinical research studies. The medical student outpatient experience also takes place in this clinic setting, with all UT Southwestern third year medical students rotating through the clinic each year. A comprehensive curriculum for residents is based in this state-of-the-art clinic with multimedia educational materials, observation rooms and a video-capture developmental assessment room to maximize the educational experience of our residents. An integrated database, linked to patient registration and discharge diagnosis allows for comprehensive tracking and follow-up of all patients. Continuity of Care clinics also operate through the Parkland Memorial Hospital system’s Community Oriented Primary Care facilities at locations close to UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center, Dallas.
