Pediatric Transport at Children's Medical Center of Dallas is one of the busiest in the nation for critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients.  The transport service consists of dedicated RN-RT teams with PEM/PICU fellow and attending direct support.

The educational exposure for the PEM/PICU fellows consists of day transport support daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday for four (4) week blocks.  The duties of the fellow " day transport call" are:

  • Physician Support for the transport teams in active transport mode
  • Telephone consult with referring physicians
  • Triaging transport patients to the appropriate service unit (ER, PICU, General Inpatient)
  • To act as the available physician on transport, if the team or physician deems is warranted

Objectives/Goals

  • The resident becomes an active team member of the RN/RT transport team.
  • Opportunities to physically participate in the patient's transport.
  • Learning about the various modes of transport for the pediatric/neonatal patient.
  • Learning the art of assessing critically ill neonates and pediatric patients from the initial triage to the physical assessment of the patient.
  • Understanding transport physiology for all modes of transport
  • Opportunities to participate in outreach, referral communication, and education of the referring centers.

The fellow is actively involved in the education component for the Transport Texas by lectures, technical skills sessions and direct involvement in Q&A sessions.  Fellows have the opportunity to participate in our very busy outreach program to referral centers.  The transport service is very active in research, with many ongoing projects, service needs, utilization, management, and new technology.
