Professional Personnel

There are 15 pediatric cardiologists on the academic faculty at UTSW. All of the pediatric cardiologists on the faculty at UTSW have offices at Childrens Medical Center (CMC). Many of our faculty enjoy national and international reputations as leaders in pediatric cardiology. There are 9 private pediatric cardiologists who practice in Dallas and who are on the clinical faculty at UTSW.   The large majority of their patients are cared for at our hospital. Surgery is performed by five cardiovascular surgeons (Steven Leonard, Hisashi Nikaidoh, W. Steves Ring, and Thomas Yeh, Jr., and the Director, Joseph Forbess all of whom have their offices at CMC.

Outpatient Services

Approximately 6500 cardiology outpatients are seen each year at CMC and at various regional outreach clinics. Subspecialty cardiology clinics including heart transplantation, heart failure, pacemaker, preventive cardiology, 22q11 deletion, and young adult congenital heart disease are held on a weekly or monthly basis.

Inpatient Services

Our inpatient service is divided between our cardiac intensive care unit and the cardiology inpatient floor in which all beds have telemetry capability with central monitoring. There are usually 12 to 16 patients in the cardiac intensive care unit and 12-18 patients on the cardiology floor. New consultations average 3 to 5 per day. About 700 children underwent cardiac surgery in 2003 (about 450 bypass procedures).
