Parkland Memorial Hospital, a 997-bed county hospital, handles more than 15,000 newborn deliveries each year and is the site of the newborn nursery. The pediatric hematology-oncology staff provides a consult service for newborn patients with hematological conditions. Children's and Parkland are both contiguous with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
A multidisciplinary approach is used in the CCBD to plan and deliver clinical care that is targeted to meet the needs of each child. Among the services offered are child life, social work, child psychiatry, nutritional support, pastoral care, physical and occupational therapy and prosthetics services. Currently there are four oncology clinical nurse practitioners who care for patients on the inpatient and outpatient services, three sickle cell disease clinical nurse practitioners and one clinical nurse practitioner devoted to the care of hemophilia patients. The outpatient clinics are fully staffed by clinic nurses and all the clinic days have defined doctor nurse teams to care for patients seen on different days.
