Acute Care Rotation

• 4th year student rotation to accommodate acute care requirements
• 2-3 students per month
• 15-17 shifts per rotation

Objectives:

1.  Recognition, evaluation, and management of the acutely ill and injured child.

• Problem-oriented history
• Pediatric Physical exam
• Case Management
  • Differential Diagnosis
  • Laboratory
  • Radiographs

2.  Technical skills unique to pediatric population

• Venous access
• Venipuncture
• Lumbar puncture
• Bladder catheterization
• Splinting
• Simple suturing

3.  Evaluation and management of common pediatric complaints including:

• Fever
• Wheezing
• Vomiting/Diarrhea
• Abdominal Pain
• Lacerations
• Fractures
• Seizure
• Stridor
• Otitis Media
• Acute Scrotum
• Minor trauma
• Limp
• Chest Pain
