Patients with renal disorders are referred to us from all over North Texas, part of Louisiana, and Oklahoma. We have five (5) full-time pediatric nephrologists who care for all types of renal problems. Our physicians are listed in Best Doctors in America.
We provide renal replacement therapy in patients from birth through adolescence. A hemodialysis unit and a training program for home peritoneal dialysis (CAPD/CCPD) is staffed by nephrology nurses. Currently, there are over 60 children and adolescents on dialysis. Two other nurses work full-time to coordinate transplant planning and follow-up activities. Our division has its own social worker, dietitian, and child life specialists. A total of 12 renal transplants in children are performed each year making it one of the largest pediatric centers for the treatment of end-stage renal disease in children in the United States.
The attending physicians teach medical students, residents, and nephrology fellows. The nephrology training program is funded in part by a National Institutes of Health Training Grant.
All of the Nephrology attendings have active research programs. Research programs are funded by the National Institutes of Health as well as other agencies. Our division publishes ~10 original manuscripts per year, as well as reviews and chapters for many major nephrology and pediatric texts. Dr. Baum is the Co-editor of the journal, Pediatric Nephrology.
