The following are the goals for the Inpatient Pediatric Nephrology rotation:

  • To understand the fluid and electrolyte requirements in healthy children as well as in disease states. The house officer is instructed in how to diagnose and treat dehydration as well as common fluid and electrolyte disorders.

  • To learn how to diagnose and treat urinary tract infections. To learn how to evaluate the urinary tract in a patient with a urinary tract infection.

  • To learn how to evaluate and treat children with vesicoureteral reflux.

  • To learn how to recognize and treat children with dysfunctional voiding.

  • To learn how to evaluate hematuria and proteinuria.

  • To learn how to evaluate and treat hypertension.

  • To learn how to evaluate and treat minimal change nephrotic syndrome.

  • To learn how to evaluate and treat acute renal failure and chronic renal failure.

  • To learn how to evaluate and treat poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.
