The Young Men's Survey (YMS)
The Dallas Young Men's Survey, a venue-based survey of young men and bisexual men, was conducted in Dallas, Texas between 1994 and 2000. Dallas was one of seven YMS cities that included Baltimore, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle. The purpose was to access the prevalence of HIV, Hepatitis B (HBV), and syphilis infection, to characterize sexual and other STD/HIV related risk taking, and to look at life circumstances that might precede risk taking among young MSM in Dallas County. In preliminary results, overall prevalence rates among this group were 12% for HIV, 16% for HBV, and 2% for syphilis. Infection rates rose sharply with age, being much higher among 27 to 29 year olds than among 15 to 10 year olds. African Americans had the highest rates of infections, up to 3 times the rates of Non-Hispanic whites for HIV, and twice the rate of HBV infection.
