Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to the prevention of disease through the partnership of professionals and community. The Community Prevention and Intervention Unit of the Department of Internal Medicine works to prevent disease and promote health by designing and conducting risk reduction interventions, prevention research, evaluation, and training. We value the diversity of our local, national, and international communities and strive to conduct our work with respect and compassion.

The Community Prevention and Intervention Unit is comprised of over 50 professionals in epidemiology, prevention research, health education, prevention counseling, evaluation research, training in behavioral intervention, planning, community assessment and intervention design. The staff specializes in working closely with communities to develop and implement effective programs.

The unit conducts epidemiological and intervention research in HIV prevention: it is one of 5 sites conducting HIV incidence studies and one of 3 sites looking at the implementation issues of social and environmental HIV prevention programs. It also provides technical assistance in community assessment, planning and evaluation to Community Planning Groups and HIV prevention contractors in Texas. It operates an HIV counseling and testing program, prevention counseling services and a street outreach prevention effort. One of 4 national HIV/STD prevention behavioral intervention-training centers is part of the unit.
