UT Southwestern Medical Center provides compassionate, personalized rehabilitation treatments for amputation at one of the nation’s pre-eminent heath-care facilities. Our expertise in amputation therapies results in state-of-the-art prostheses (artificial limbs) that are expertly designed and fitted to meet each patient’s individual needs.

UT Southwestern’s rehabilitation specialists attentively work with patients to provide the knowledge and specialized training needed to achieve the best possible results from an artificial arm or artificial leg. Our caring specialists will help patients recover a sense of well-being, attain high levels of function and enjoy more independence. Amputees who have been a part of our program have realized extraordinary results in their rehabilitation − including participating in sports and driving a car.

Our occupational, physical and recreational therapists provide the specialized care and treatments needed to address each patient’s specific situation. In addition, individualized exercise programs designed to strengthen the appropriate muscle groups will help maximize the patient’s ability to effectively use the artificial arm or artificial leg and regain a normal lifestyle.

If the amputation is related to a vascular condition, our physical medicine and rehabilitation therapists design a rehabilitation program to effectively address requirements following vascular surgery or other vascular treatments.

UT Southwestern believes that family members play an integral role in rehabilitation, and our specialists work diligently to provide a patient’s family with the information needed to promote recovery. In addition, our medical staff extends a wide variety of services to families, including psychological counseling, support groups and educational programs that address all of the questions about amputation and prostheses.

With the comprehensive medical and rehabilitation resources available at UT Southwestern, our caring staff will provide all of the prosthetic training and therapeutic treatments patients need to overcome amputation and realize a long, healthy life.
