An estimated 57 million Americans – about one in four adults – suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. UT Southwestern Medical Center’s physicians and researchers have access to the latest scientific findings and treatments for adult psychiatric illnesses, including:
- Addiction and substance abuse: Substance abuse contributes to many psychiatric conditions, and it can also be an indication of underlying psychiatric illness. UT Southwestern’s program helps addicts deal with their cravings and eliminate their use of addictive substances.
- Aerospace psychiatry: This is a developing branch of psychiatry directed to the unique psychiatric problems that may develop in an aerospace environment.
- Anxiety, phobias and panic disorders: UT Southwestern provides psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety.
- Bipolar disorder: UT Southwestern’s bipolar specialists provide consultation and psychiatric evaluation. They use the latest treatment approaches, including pharmacological treatments and/or alternative or complementary treatments.
- Depression: Depression is a common illness, ranging from mild cases that don’t affect daily performance, to severe depression that complicates medical illnesses or disables patients. UT Southwestern uses effective treatments for depression that can improve a patient’s overall function and offer a better quality of life.
- Geriatric psychiatry: Geriatric psychiatry specialists at UT Southwestern have expertise in the treatment of mood disorders in elders and in the management of the emotional and behavioral symptoms of dementia.
- Memory disorders: UT Southwestern psychiatrists team with neuropsychologists and neurologists to assess and treat individuals with memory and other cognitive dysfunction, including changes in memory, attention, language, visuospatial abilities, reasoning or personality.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorders: UT Southwestern providers use psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy to help patients manage their obsessions or compulsions and the extreme anxiety or depression that besets patients with these disorders.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a common condition with symptoms that vary but include distressing dreams, difficulty with concentration and an exaggerated startle response. Modern treatment can greatly reduce the suffering produced by this disorder.
- Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a potentially disabling chronic illness whose treatment has advanced remarkably within the past ten years. UT Southwestern offers treatments for this condition that can improve a patient’s functioning and quality of life.

Women’s mental health: UT Southwestern offers mental health services for women who sometimes need special assistance for instances of postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal mood disorders or trauma and loss.
