Melanoma :: Conditions and Illnesses

About Our Program | Conditions and Illnesses | Making an Appointment | Our Physicians | Patient Education Materials | Support Groups and Resources

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., affecting more than 500,000 people each year. While skin cancer can be found on any part of the body, approximately 80 percent of skin cancers appear on the face, head and neck.

The vast majority of skin cancers are removed surgically with a simple excision that usually leaves a thin, barely visible scar. UT Southwestern Medical Center is also dedicated to using advanced reconstructive techniques that supplement treatment with surgical procedures that diminish or remove scars, repair any damaged tissue and achieve excellent cosmetic results.

UT Southwestern’s physicians and researchers have access to the latest scientific findings and treatments for skin cancer, including:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Biopsy
  • Cryosurgery
  • Dermatoscopy
  • Excision
  • Laser surgery
  • Melanoma
  • Metastatic melanoma
  • Mohs surgery
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
