Study Title: Exercise for Depressed Youth

Purpose of the Study: To determine if an exercise routine is an effective non-medication treatment for major depressive disorder in adolescents.
Participant Eligibility: Adolescents age 12 - 17 who have sufficient symptoms of depression (sadness or irritability, changes in appetite or weight, difficulty with sleep, feelings of boredom, thoughts about death or dying withdrawn from friends or activities, difficulty wiht concentration) meeting DSM-IV criteria. Need to be physically healthy enough to participate in an exercise study and not currently participating in a regular active exercise activity. Not currently taking any type of antidepressant medication.

Other Information: Following an initial evaluation of the adolescent's depression and physical health, the adolescent will be enrolled by random assignment into either a stretch or exercise group. Treatment will consist of 12 weeks of exercise or stretching 3-4 times a week. The first visit of the week will be with a trainer at The Cooper Institute. Weekly measurements of depressive symptoms will occur. The adolescent will receive compensation for the weekly visits attended and each follow up visit they attend.
