Ad Title: Are You Scheduled for Gastric Banding?
Study Title: Ectopic Fat Changes After Surgically Induced Weight Loss: Does It Explain the Resolution of Diabetes?

Purpose of the Study: This study follows patients as they lose weight due to gastric banding. We measure changes in the fat content of the abdomen, under the skin, and in several organs for the first year following surgery. In addition, we measure changes in glucose tolerance and insulin resistance during that same time period.
Participant Eligibility: Patients who are scheduled to have gastric banding are eligible for the study. Patients who are unable to have an MRI (i.e. severe claustrophobia or metallic implants), have a history of pancreatic disease (other than type 2 diabetes), drink more than 2 alcoholics per day, or weigh more than 320lbs are not eligible for the study.

Other Information: The first study procedures are done two weeks prior to the gastric banding surgery. There are a total of eight visits over approximately 14 months. Each visit will last 1 to 1.5 days. Participants will have laboratory tests free of charge. Compensation for the study totals $800. Please note that the study participant and/or their insurance is financially responsible for the gastric banding surgery. If interested, please try to contact study personnel 3-4 weeks prior to your scheduled surgery date.
