Ad Title: Brain Diseases that Impair Thinking and Memory i.e. Alzheimer's, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Frontotemporal Dementia
Study Title: Neurobiology of Alzheimer's Disease and Aging - (Genetics of Dementing Brain Diseases)
Protocol Number: 0484-350
Department(s) involved in the Study: Neurology, Psychiatry
Purpose of the Study: To learn more about brain diseases that impair thinking and memory. There are several purposes of this study: 1.) To obtain blood cells or cells from a cheek swab, and/or cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from selected individuals or their close relatives to learn how these illnesses are inherited and to determine genetic risk factors for these illnesses. 2.) To determine the type of cholesterol carrying protein in blood to see if it is related to the risk of developing certain diseases 3.) To quantitatively study Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scans 4.) To use information from evaluation to learn more about brain diseases.
Participant Eligibility: Individuals of all ethnic origins will be admitted to the Memory Research Unit who have symptoms and features characteristic of early Alzheimer's Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment and Frontotemporal Dementia or other cognitive disorders. Person's with no memory complaints will also be recruited to serve as normal controls for the research studies. Participants will have their data entered into our database and used as research data.
