All women receive one of four FDA-approved antidepressant medications (Zoloft, Lexapro, Wellbutrin XL, or Effexor XR) at no charge. Women will know which medication they are receiving and can help in selecting it. Treatment is for six months. Half of the women will be randomly selected to also participate in couples sessions with their partner led by a licensed counselor to discuss the impact of depression on their relationship and how to cope with depression. Partners must be willing to participate for either treatment group (medication alone or medication plus couple sessions).
