Study Title: Couple Therapy and Pharmacotherapy for Major Depression
Protocol Number: 112004-011
Department(s) involved in the Study: Psychiatry
Purpose of the Study: To treat depression in women experiencing depression who are also experiencing stress or problems in their marriage or committed relationship.
Participant Eligibility: To be eligible you must be:  Female  Married and living with your husband or in a committed relationship and have lived together for one year or more  Suffering from depression  Having problems or concerns in your relationship To be eligible there cannot be:  Bipolar Disorder  Current active substance abuse, extramarital affairs, or domestic violence  Any other counseling, psychotherapy, or antidepressant medicines Your partner must be willing to participate in research procedures.

Other Information: All women receive one of four FDA-approved antidepressant medications (Zoloft, Lexapro, Wellbutrin XL, or Effexor XR) at no charge. Women will know which medication they are receiving and can help in selecting it. Treatment is for six months. Half of the women will be randomly selected to also participate in couples sessions with their partner led by a licensed counselor to discuss the impact of depression on their relationship and how to cope with depression. Partners must be willing to participate for either treatment group (medication alone or medication plus couple sessions).
