In April of 2002, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas announced a $450 million capital campaign - Innovations in Medicine. The campaign goal was recently raised to $500 million. These funds will help recruit and retain top talent, build facilities to house the research and clinical programs they will pursue, and provide the state-of-the-art technology their work requires. The completion of the Human Genome Project - the decoding of human DNA - has given physicians and researchers the blueprint for human life. This achievement, and the research it is making possible, will provide the knowledge necessary to revolutionize medicine and provide answers for many of the most widespread and devastating diseases. Alzheimer's disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and infectious disease, as well as birth defects and emerging threats from bioterrorism, are all targets for the new science. The $500 million fund for Innovations in Medicine will secure UT Southwestern's place in the top tier of medical institutions. In partnership with the private sector, we can build on the state's commitment to medical research and technological advancement. With the Innovations in Medicine campaign, UT Southwestern can seize the opportunity to be at the pinnacle of medical institutions worldwide.
