The Southwestern Graduate School's Career Services program is accessible to all graduate students and postdoctoral appointees  This program provides a range of services including resume preparation, mock interviews, evaluation of seminars, and skills necessary for positions sought, as well as information on both academia and industry careers. 

We are committed to helping our students and postdoctoral appointees achieve their ultimate goal - a promising and successful career in science. 

The office of Career Services is housed in the Division of Basic Science.  We are located in L2.214, on the second floor of the Cecil H.  and Ida Green Science Building.  Please feel free to stop by or e-mail us to schedule an appointment.

Services Available

Resume/C.V.  Preparation Bring a current copy of your vitae or resume, along with any first-authored and co-authored publications, to the Career Services office.  Your resume will be reviewed by a Career Services official. 

Mock Interviews Interviewing can be a nerve-wracking experience.  Preparation is essential in presenting yourself as the expertly qualified candidate that you are.  You will have the opportunity to practice your presentation skills either individually or to a panel committee. 

Seminar Evaluation Critique of seminars is crucial in addressing weakness and assessing strengths in presentation and teaching styles.  Your seminar can be critiqued either individually or by a panel committee. 

Skills Inventory Completion of a self-assessment, coupled with a skills inventory by the placement office, can give you the opportunity to work toward your goal of a successful career in science. top


Career Services Forms

PRIOR to your scheduled appointment with Career Services please complete the following: 

The Candidate Profile is utilized to get a complete picture of your employment goals.  All requested documentation on this form should be submitted (in either electronic or hardcopy form) no less than five days prior to your appointment. 

The Career Services Questionnaire is utilized as an evaluative tool and inventory of skills, education and your goals for your career.  Completing this form in it's entirety is essential in determining the course of action taken to secure employment.

Career Basics Booklet: Available for Free Download
Science Careers' editorial team released "Career Basics: Advice and Resources for Scientists" in early 2007, and in less than three months, more than 5,000 print copies of the booklet were distributed. To keep up with demand, Science Careers has made both an HTML and a PDF version available for download. The booklet provides advice and help on preparing CVs and resumes, writing grants and scientific papers, networking, and more. Access your copy.
