Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and methods to define and solveproblems in medicine and biology. Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people, for the challenge of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to problems of health care delivery. Satisfying biomedical engineering careers can be found in industrial, health care, academic, private laboratory, and government settings. The typical biomedical engineer will work in a team environment which may include physical scientists and engineers, clinicians, and life scientists.

All students (Ph.D. and MS) who apply to this very competitive program, and are accepted in the UT Southwestern BME program receive a nationally competitive stipend.  Once here, in the first year, in addition to taking classes, students do research rotations to compete for positions in a potential mentor's laboratory.  Starting in the second year, students are supported by their mentor and continue to receive a full stipend to do their research.

Administrative procedures at the two schools follow one set of academic instructions for both campuses. A mechanism was established to transfer grant funds for faculty and student services between campuses which further enhanced the research collaboration. Students and faculty may now do research on either campus, thereby taking advantage of funding sources and research facilities, and enhancing the effectiveness of research training. Strong interactions are provided for biomedical engineering students with clinical and basic life science departments
