 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

As one of the senior therapists on the MacArthur study, a pioneer study on developing a CBT manual for depressed adolescents, Dr. Kennard played a central role in translating clinical interventions into a manual for therapists (Wilkes et al., 1994). She has served as a site co-investigator (with Dr. Graham Emslie) and cognitive behavior therapist/supervisor in three NIMH funded multi-site treatment studies of adolescent depression and suicide (TADS, TORDIA, and TASA). Dr. Kennard co-authored individual and family CBT treatment manuals for these three NIMH studies. She was the Principal Investigator in an NIMH funded treatment study (R34 MH72737) to prevent relapse in youth with depression. In this pilot study, she developed a sequential treatment strategy to prevent relapse using cognitive behavioral therapy in youth who responded to antidepressant medication. This pilot study has been expanded to a larger trial which is currently in progress. Dr. Kennard is one of the principal investigators of this clinical trial (Pediatric MDD: Sequential Treatment with Fluoxetine and Relapse Prevention CBT, NIMH R01 MH 39188). Her research and publications are in the area of child and adolescent depression, and cognitive and family factors associated with this illness.
