Prevention and treatment of vaso-occlusive complications of sickle cell disease during infancy, childhood, and adolescence
Better understanding of the management and natural history of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura during childhood, with particular emphasis on outcome measures other than platelet count (e.g., bleeding signs and symptoms, cost of therapy, and quality of life)
Development of improved means of diagnosing and treating patients with hemophilia and other hereditary blood coagulation disorders, with special emphasis on eliminating the complications of the disease and its therapy
Study of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of childhood anemias, including iron deficiency anemia and Diamond-Blackfan syndrome
Understanding the risk of thrombosis following splenectomy
