Dr. Westergaard received his M.D.degree from University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1964. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University Hospital in Copenhagen and trained as a fellow in gastroenterology from 1969 to 1971 at the same institution. He then trained as a postgraduate fellow in gastroenterology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas from 1972 to 1974. In the past Dr. Westergaard's main research interest has been intestinal transport processes. Previous studies focused on the characterization of fatty acid,cholesterol and bile acid intestinal absorption in both in vitro and in vivo studies. More recent studies have focused on the regulation of the intestinal glucose transporters in isolated enterocytes.
