Dr. Turley is research professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University and then completed three years of postdoctoral training in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas in 1979. His research interests focus mainly on three areas of cholesterol metabolism. One of these relates to the mechanisms that regulate sterol absorption. The second area is the regulation and quantitative importance of the two main pathways by which the liver converts cholesterol to bile acids. These studies are utilizing mice deficient in either cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase or sterol 27-hydroxylase. The third area of interest relates to the regulation of cholesterol metabolism in the brain during fetal and neonatal development. Dr. Turley gives frequent lectures and has published extensively on these topics.
