Dr. Thiele joined the Department of Internal Medicine in 1983, and the Graduate Program in Immunology in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 1986. He served as chief of Hepatology from 1998-2005 and Interim Chief of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases from 2002-2005 before assuming his current position as Vice Chair for Financial Affairs, Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Thiele has broad interests in clinical hepatology, with special interests in acute viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis and acute hepatitis of unknown etiology. Research conducted in Dr. Thiele’s laboratory focuses on delineating mechanisms of cytotoxic lymphocyte activation, differentiation and effector function, and exploring the role of these immune effector mechanisms in clearance of viral infections from the liver.
