 PERSONAL OVERVIEW
     
Gordon Green was born in Dallas, Texas. After graduation from Rice University, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Essex (CVS-9). He returned to Dallas to attend medical school at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. After receiving the M.D. degree, he completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle. He subsequently received the Master of Public Health degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Dr. Green held faculty positions in the Departments of Biometry and Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. While in Little Rock he also was Medical Director of the Arkansas Children's Hospital and Director of the Child Development Clinic/Handicapped Children's Center for the Arkansas State Department of Health. Dr. Green participated in studies of birth defects at the National Center for Toxicological Research. Following a six year tour of duty with the United States Public Health Service, he was director of the Dallas County Health Department, and Health Authority for the City and County of Dallas,for seven years. In 1991, he was appointed Dean of Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Dr. Green is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine; Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine; and a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Association of Allied Health Professions, and other professional organizations. Over the years in Dallas, he has served on the Dallas Task Force on Adolescent Health and School-Age Pregnancy; the Regional Air Quality Task Force of the North Central Texas Council of Governments; the Health Advisory Committee of the Dallas Independent School District; and on the Boards of Directors of Youth Impact Centers, the Health Education Training Centers Alliance of Texas, the Science Place, North Texas Taping and Radio for the Blind and Carter BloodCare Community Blood Bank. He completed a year as president, then served as Chair of the Board of the Dallas County Medical Society. He now serves as chairman of the Dallas County Medical Society’s Board of Health, focusing on the local response to bioterrorism. For the Texas Medical Association, he has been a member of the Council on Medical Education, the Committee on Liaison with Medical Schools, and the TMA’s Bioterrorism Task Force. He has been a member of the Texas Medicine Editorial Board and a member of the TMA Council on Public Health. He is a member of the American College of Preventative Medicine Terrorism Committee, and of the FBI (Regional) Weapons of Mass Destruction Working Group. Dr. Green is author of articles on birth defects and on public health topics, and co-edited a textbook of public health, now in its second edition. He has traveled in the former Soviet Union, North and South America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
