 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Studies in my laboratory are directed towards dissection of how signals derived from cells of the innate defense system affect the responses of immune cells with antigen-specific receptors. Specifically, we are investigating productive interactions between natural killer (NK) cells and antibody-secreting B lymphocytes that may be important for mounting effective immune responses against pathogens. These interactions are especially important when T cell responses are compromised but they may also modify the specific direction of T cell responses even when the latter system is intact. These interactions may also contribute to the development of B cell mediated autoimmunity. Ongoing experiments are also directed towards the identification of specific cell surface molecules involved in these interactions to better facilitate the dissection of in vivo responses.
