The focus of our research is directed at understanding human CD4+ T cell activation and cytokine production. Recent studies are focused on dissecting the mechanisms involved in the development of T helper-1 (Th-1) proinflammatory effector cells that secrete interferon-gamma, Th-2 effector cells that secrete cytokines such as IL-4 and regulatory T cells that downregulate inflammatory responses. Another goal is to identify T cell surface markers and intracellular molecules that correlate with activation states or stages of post-thymic differentiation. Information gained from these studies is applied to investigations of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. These studies will lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in autoimmunity.
